On 19th July 2026, driven by a vision to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Sri Lanka, members of the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, joined hands with CleanSL, the flagship environmental initiative of the Rotaract District 3220.
Assigned to Wellawatte beach, our club arrived with enthusiasm, dedicated to removing waste from the coastline while raising awareness about responsible waste management and environmental conservation.
This clean-up was conducted as part of the nationwide 1 Ton Challenge, a campaign encouraging Rotaractors across Sri Lanka to collect recyclable waste and champion a circular economy. Every bag of waste collected was an active step towards preserving the island’s beautiful coastal environment for the generations to come.
Through dedicated teamwork, the participants collected 259.5 kg of recyclable waste!
Here is how the numbers broke down:
PET Bottles – 78.8 kg
Mixed Recyclables – 133.7 kg
Glass – 47 kg
Achieving this demonstrated the true power of collective action and community-driven impact. We are deeply grateful to every Rotaractor, volunteer and organiser who contributed their time and effort to make this initiative a success. Let us continue working together to build a cleaner, greener Sri Lanka.
