A child’s ability to see clearly plays a vital role in their learning and development. However, many children live with undetected visual impairments, often without realising that their vision is affected. Through early identification and timely intervention, many eye conditions can be managed effectively, preventing avoidable visual impairment and, in some cases, irreversible vision loss.
Recognising the importance of early detection, Sharp Eyes, Learn Better aims to raise awareness about childhood eye health by empowering teachers to identify children who may have visual difficulties and understand the importance of timely referrals.
As part of this initiative, Rotaractors participated in a practical workshop designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct basic vision screening among schoolchildren. The session covered the use of the Snellen chart to assess visual acuity, alongside an introduction to common childhood eye conditions that may be identified through screening. Children who screen positive can subsequently be referred to optometrists or hospitals for further assessment and appropriate care.
By strengthening awareness and promoting early screening, Sharp Eyes, Learn Better strives to ensure that visual impairments do not become barriers to a child’s education and future. Through collaboration among Rotaract clubs, teachers, and healthcare professionals, the initiative takes an important step towards helping every child see clearly and learn better.
