Project VACA, short for “Voice Against Child Abuse,” stands as a beacon of change, initiated by the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. In response to the prevalent issue of child abuse in Sri Lanka, VACA seeks to address this societal concern through awareness, education, and advocacy.
Embarking on its first phase, VACA orchestrated a transformative Teacher Training Session led by Dr. Chathuri Suraweera. This crucial session unfolded at St. Matthew’s College, drawing the participation of 50 dedicated educators. The objective was clear — equip teachers with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to identify and address child abuse effectively.
The training session delved into the nuanced aspects of recognizing signs of abuse, understanding the psychological impact on children, and fostering an environment where victims feel safe to speak out. Dr. Suraweera’s expertise illuminated the complexities surrounding child abuse, providing valuable insights to the teachers who play a pivotal role in the lives of their students.
By initiating the conversation at the educational frontlines, VACA Phase 1 not only empowered teachers with the necessary skills but also laid the foundation for a broader societal shift.
