Lights dimmed, popcorn popped, and excitement filled the air as the New Building Lecture Hall at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, transformed into a cinematic wonderland on August 19th, 2022. The stage was set for an unforgettable evening of entertainment, all thanks to the brainchild of Project Chair, Teshan Koralage, and the dedicated Project Committee consisting of Asel Jatunarachchi, Ashvni Chandrakumar, Sandithi Illangasinghe, Amali Samaranayake, and Vinudi Edirisinghe.
Movie Night wasn’t just your typical movie-watching experience. It was a cleverly crafted project aimed at raising funds for future club activities while providing an opportunity for members and students to unwind and enjoy a movie night with friends right within the faculty premises.
The event promised a full “movie theatre” experience, complete with cozy seating arrangements and a selection of classic horror films to give everyone a good scare. But that’s not all—snacks were available at a minimal price, ensuring that attendees could munch on their favorite treats while immersing themselves in the movie magic. The ambiance was carefully curated to transport everyone into the enchanting world of cinema.
While the primary objective was to raise funds for the club, Movie Night had an array of additional goals. It served as an icebreaker experience for club members, allowing them to bond and connect over shared interests. Students had the chance to create lasting memories with their friends, forging deeper connections amidst their busy schedules.
Little did the project committee know, their venture would inspire something even greater. It is rumored that the success of Movie Night sparked the creation of a Film Club within the Faculty—a testament to the power of dreaming big and bringing ideas to life.
The event left a lasting impression, not only in terms of funds raised but also in the hearts of those who attended. It was an evening of laughter, suspense, and camaraderie, reminding everyone that amidst the rigors of academic life, there’s always room for entertainment and shared experiences.
Movie Night proved that fundraising doesn’t have to be a mundane affair. It can be an opportunity to come together, enjoy a good film, and create memories that will be cherished for years to come. As the credits rolled and the curtain closed, the success of this project served as a reminder to dream, dare, and make a difference—one movie night at a time.
